Marrakech Sightseeing
Jemaa el Fna is the beating heart and soul of the Marrakech medina. While it’s undoubtedly touristy, it’s still important to pass through here at least once during the day and once during the evening.
Ben Youssef Madrasa: This exceptionally preserved Koranic school from the 12th century is one of the largest in North Africa.
The Saadian Tombs date back to Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur (1578-1603) and the mausoleum comprises of the interments of about sixty members of the Saadi Dynasty – ancient rulers of Morocco.
Bab Agnaou is one of the 19 gates that lead into the Marrakech medina and was built in the 12th century.
The Dar Si Said museum is an ancient palace with stunning Hispano-Moorish ceilings.
koutoubia mosque garden: The minaret of this 12th century mosque is visible from much of Marrakech. While non-muslims can not go inside, the courtyard and immediate surrounding area and gardens are well worth a visit.
The Bahia Palace is relatively new, originating in the 19th century, and boasts a large courtyard, fountains, wall carvings and beautiful gardens.
The old Jewish quarter in the Marrakech medina was created by the Saadians in 1558. During the 16th century, the Mellah enjoyed substantial autonomy with its own fountains, synagogues, gardens and even souks. The current day Mellah is almost entirely Muslim – there are only about 250 Jews remaining in Marrakech and many now live outside of the medina.
The old Spice Market, known as “Place des Epices” or “Rahba Kedima” is a small square in the middle of the souks. Present day vendors sell a host of spices – cinnamon, saffron, cumin – also herbal remedies. In the middle of the square old women sit selling woollen hats, woven baskets and wooden kitchen utensils. There’s a great café in the square, Café des Epices, and just next door is the Carpet Souk.
The Marrakech Souks represent an exotic market like no other and are among the best in Morocco, offering a huge array of high quality items. Shopping aside, they offer an experience not to be missed.
